I have many students who take up the drums just because they are intrigued by the electric kit (sometimes called electronic) that I have in my teaching studio. The lack of volume from these kits is very beneficial when practicing and you can use headphones if you prefer. I have even had experienced drummers visit me for tuition, who have only ever used acoustic kits, end up buying one as a result of trying mine!
The examinations, if you want to do them, are on an acoustic kit but most of the practice can be done on the electric kit. I recently had two students taking drum kit examinations and both had their lessons and practice on an electric kit and they both achieved Distinction for Grade Three even though it was the first drum kit examination they had entered for.
